Jodi Arias – timed horoscope

Jodi Arias horoscopeJodi Arias’ time of birth has now been released, and is available at astro.com. She was born on July 9 1980 at 1.52 am in Salinas, California.  Her birth chart heads this post.

The trouble about horoscopes like this is, that we’re looking at something after the event.  If we try hard enough we can find the signature of a killer in any horoscope.  Yet as far as Jodi is concerned, there is nothing that really stands out.

We can I suppose point to her Taurus Ascendant.  Lots of people have Taurus rising, but maybe this rising sign can give a singularity of purpose, that can be particularly strong when it comes to relationships.  So if you tell someone with Taurus rising that it’s over, don’t expect a simple, straight-forward parting of the waves.  However that’s not the same as resorting to homicide!

Interestingly, Ruth Ellis had Taurus rising.  If you’re from Britain, you’ll know that she was the last woman to be hanged in the United Kingdom, in 1955.  Like Jodi, Ruth Ellis was a woman in her late twenties in an abusive relationship, and like Jodi she got hold of a gun and shot her partner.  And like Jodi, Ruth Ellis made sure that her partner was dead.  She chased after him, outside a pub in North London, and brought him down with one  shot; she then fired three more shots into his body, including one in the back, at a range of an inch.  Unlike Jodi, Ruth Ellis never make any attempt to hide her guilt, and unlike Jodi the public were sympathetic to her case, especially after she was sentenced to death.  And unlike Jodi, for Ruth Ellis everything happened quickly.  She committed the crime on April 10 1955, she was sentenced to death in June 1955 and she was hanged the following month.  So Ruth Ellis, just over three months after committing the crime, was herself dead.

Ruth Ellis said something very important just before her execution: ‘It is quite clear to me that I was not the person who shot him. When I saw myself with the revolver I knew I was another person.’  This should perhaps influence how we see the horoscope of some killers.  Jodi Arias hasn’t got the horoscope of a killer, but instead an interaction between her psychology, and outside circumstances, made her become a killer.

What made Jodi a killer was her interaction with Travis Alexander, though in some respects Travis is flagged in her horoscope.  As she was born at night, one takes Mars rather than the Sun as the primary ruler of the man in her life, and her Mars is somewhat unintegrated with the rest of her chart.  By the way, Mars is also ruler of her Seventh House of relationships, because she has Scorpio on the Seventh House cusp.

Her Mars is right at the end of Virgo, in the Sixth House, with no close aspects to any other planet in the horoscope.  To me this Mars represents a man who is fastidious and hypocritical, who lives his life by double standards.  He could be obsessed by the body, and also be critical about other people’s physical appearance.  Yet because of Mars’ unaspected nature, it is difficult for her to integrate this image of masculinity into her nature.

Looking at the killing, it’s clear that sex played a big role, so it is important to look at Jodi’s sexuality.  She has Saturn semi-square her Venus-Mars midpoint.  I think this is crucial.  As a person, she has issues with sexuality, and I doubt she was able to use her sexual expression in a particularly healthy way.  This reminds us that very often the people who are the most sexually inhibited are often the most promiscuous.  Sex was all much of a muchness, and that’s probably why she allowed Travis such a free hand with her body.

Yet the damage was hinted at by the connection between Travis’ Mars in the eighth degree of Gemini and Jodi’s Moon in the eleventh degree of this same sign.  See below for Travis’ horoscope:

Travis Alexander's horoscopeIn a female horoscope the Moon is arguably the most important planet, so Travis’ Mars smashed into her Moon – an attraction that turned into a violation.  Furthermore, Jodi’s Moon was square her Jupiter in Virgo, that hints at excessive behavior on her part.

Incidentally, Travis had Venus, Mars and Jupiter in Gemini.  He might have been a Leo, but the Gemini influence was substantial.  A supposed motivational speaker, and someone who enjoyed variety, especially in relationships.  The kind of variety that doesn’t have an emotional consequence, remembering that he lacks any traditional planets in Water signs.  Though what’s really interesting is that Jodi’s Venus in Gemini is at 16 degrees of the sign, the same degree as Travis’ Venus-Mars midpoint.  The Venus-Mars combination is about sexuality, and clearly there was something about Jodi that really turned him on – and turned on his fantasies.

I don’t know precisely why Jodi killed Travis, but I’m thinking that the two of them saw the relationship in different ways.  For Travis is was an interesting sexual adventure, for Jodi it was an existential issue – she felt that she gave everything to Travis, and the sexual submission was all part of it.  Yet the moment Travis wanted to end the relationship, the reality might have have dawned on her.  The man she gave everything to (at least in her subjective view) wanted to walk away.  This meant, existentially, that she had to kill him.  In this light, I’m reminded of Jean Paul Sartre’s statement, when talking about colonialism, that a slave can only be free when he confronts his master and kills him.

One final observation about Jodi’s horoscope is that she has Uranus in the Seventh House.  I remember reading a Nineteeth Century astrology book that described Uranus in the Seventh as ‘death by the mob’.  Furthermore, Jodi’s nodal axis, so often associated with Karma, is exactly square Uranus – her Uranus is at 22 degree Scorpio, her North Node at 22 degrees Leo. When she killed Travis, on June 4 2008, the North Node was at 22 Aquarius, the South Node by definition at 22 degrees Leo. In other words, some powerful, collective forces were at work.

Somehow Jodi has attracted the wrath of the mob, and it seems that commentator after commentator wants to get on board the ‘kill Jodi’ bandwagon.  I doubt the mob will succeed in taking her all the way to the gurney, but they are certainly trying their hardest.  So in some way Jodi’s fate is to draw out the anger and hatred that’s festering in society.  We might therefore say that the whole thing is not about Jodi and it’s not about Travis – it’s about America.

Bad week for Libran psychics

.The Fortune Teller Painting by Georges de La TourI’ve just spent the last hour trying to get the birth dates of the Castro brothers, who kidnapped the three women in Cleveland, Ohio. No joy.

So instead I am going to give a mention to TV psychic Sylvia Browne, who was born on October 19 1936, making her a Libran.

According to The Huffington Post, the mother of Amanda Berry, one of the kidnap victims, was on the Montel Williams show in 2004, and she asked Sylvia Browne what had happened to her daughter.

“She’s not alive, honey,” Sylvia Browne replied. “Your daughter’s not the kind who wouldn’t call.”

Of course we all make mistakes, and Sylvia Browne was making a reasonable call.  When people disappear, they often end up dead.  However a psychic is supposed to have the edge, and should have picked up that the daughter of the person she was talking to was, at that very moment, emanating signs of life.  We should also remember that Sylvia Browne is paid to be a psychic, not a statistician.

Would I have made the same mistake?  Well, I don’t claim to have psychic powers, so I would have used astrology to try to answer the question.  I would have looked at the precise time I had been asked, then set up a horoscope for this time.  If the chart had been bad, I would have given a negative judgement.

However there is an important way in which my approach differs to that of a psychic.  I have an objective horoscope in my hands, which can be interpreted using a set of time-honoured rules.  However much I might believe that the girl is dead, as an amateur statistician, I have to consider the objective significators in the chart.  Furthermore, I can give my chart to other astrologers, and get their opinions on it.

As I always say, a psychic reading is usually more glamorous and exciting than an astrology reading.  But in most cases it is dominated by the psychic’s very believable subjectivity – which is why, when the dust has settled, a good astrologer will tend to be more accurate than a psychic.

Jodi Arias, Cancerians, July 9

Jodi AriasTravis Alexander was a Leo.  He was also a Mormon.  He had a relationship with a Cancerian woman called Jodi Arias. She allegedly stabbed him 29 times, cut his throat and shot him in the head – and now she’s on trial for her life, in Arizona.

Jodi Arias isn’t denying that she killed someone.  According to one view, she was in an abusive relationship with Travis Alexander – he made extravagant sexual demands, and at the same time  he wasn’t prepared to commit to her.  An alternative view is that she was obsessed with him, to the point of being a stalker.  But whatever happened, the man ended up dead.

Travis Alexander, being a Mormon, probably believed in lots of things, for example that one of the tribes of Israel went to America centuries before the birth of Christ.  However I doubt that he believed in astrology, which is a shame, because if he’d understood how sensitive Cancerian women can be, he might still be alive.  They’re certainly not the kind of people to play games with, or to indulge in fantasy-ridden, on-off relationships with.  As William Congreve famously wrote:

Heaven has no rage like love to hatred turned,
Nor hell a fury like a woman scorned…

Matters were made worse by the specifics of Jodi Arias’ horoscope, set for 1.52 a.m. on July 9 1980, in Salinas, California:

Jodi Arias horoscope She has a conjunction between Mars and Saturn, in Virgo.  These two planets are the ‘death pair’, and are often linked with frustration and repressed anger.  She also has Venus in Gemini making a square aspect to Saturn – relationships are going to be hard work, and emotions could get trapped and distorted.  Furthermore, her natal Saturn is making a 45 degree aspect to her Venus-Mars midpoint.

Reinhold Ebertin wrote of this combination:

Inhibitions in love-life, an inclination to adultery, an abnormal and pathological sex-expression.  – A separation in love.

On the day of the killing, June 4 2008, the planet Uranus was at 22 degrees 28 minutes Pisces – so it was exactly opposite Jodi Arias’ Saturn, which is at about 22 degrees 6 minutes Virgo.  It was also aspecting her Venus-Mars midpoint.  So Uranus, the planet of earthquakes and general instability, was triggering the Saturn-Venus-Mars configuration.  The dam burst, the frustrations and built-up anger came pouring out.

As for Travis Alexander, he was out his league.  Being a Leo he probably had a high opinion of himself, and at the same time I doubt that he was particularly sensitive – he had no traditional planets in the Water signs of Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces.  Furthermore, there were probably two images of femininity in his mind, represented by his Moon in Capricorn and his Venus conjunct Jupiter in Gemini.  This is the chart, set for 12.01 am on July 28 1977, at Riverside, California:

Travis Alexander's horoscope

The Moon in Capricorn was the nice, safe wife, who would smooth his way to career and social success.  Jodi Arias, the Venus in Gemini woman, didn’t fit into this picture, and she was someone dispensable, who could be dropped when circumstances demanded it. Still, she was exciting, and she stimulated his sense of adventure.  However Travis Alexander’s lack of sensitivity meant that he didn’t understand what he was dealing with, and through his misjudged behavior he unleashed a force that ultimately destroyed him.

As for Jodi Arias, it’s amazing how much hostility there is to her on the Internet, and the general assumption is, that she’s guilty as charged.  However even if she’s a killer it doesn’t mean she’s a murderer, and looking at the horoscopes involved it seems that at some level Travis Alexander must take a share of the blame.

Note: The timed charts included in this article were an edited addition.  At the time I wrote the original of this article the timed charts were not available to me.  A more recent article about Jodi Arias has been written here:

Why Strauss-Kahn is Innocent

Dominique Strauss-KahnI was reading an article in The Guardian about the psycholigical dimension of Dominique Strauss-Kahn’s alleged offence.  Some people in France are taking the view that the pressure was too much for him, and on an unconscious level he deliberately sabotaged his bid for the French Presidency.  In other words, consciously he wanted to be President, but unconsciously he took action to escape the responsibility, which is why he deliberately sabotaged his political career.

As The Guardian put it:

If he is found guilty, some suggested an unconscious drive to self-sabotage by a man who couldn’t bear the power that had been foisted on him – his wife and all around him so wanted to see him become French president next year that he might have been unable to cope. Serge Hefez, the French psychiatrist, compared the Strauss-Kahn saga to the head-butt of the football hero Zinedine Zidane, which ended France’s World Cup dream of 2006. If true, it was about the unbearable pressure of rising to the top, he suggested. All agreed that the image in France of DSK as a serial-seducer whose friends claimed he “loved women” was totally different from someone committing violent sex attacks, which could be psychologically linked to having low self-esteem, hating yourself and hating others.

I love this kind of analysis and I am sure that in many cases it applies.  Someone is on the brink of success, in a particular area of life, but it’s not their true destiny, so they take action to destroy everything they’ve worked for.

Personal Destiny – the case of Jeffrey Archer

An example of someone who probably wasn’t destinied to be a front-rank politician is British novelist Jeffrey Archer.  His horoscope shows this very clearly.  He has the South Node of the Moon in the Tenth House, which I’ll briefly explain what that means.

In astrology the two points in space where the path of the Moon crosses the path of the Sun are known as the North and South Nodes of the Moon.  The North Node, where the Moon crosses from South to North, represents the path we should be following, while the South Node is the path of least resistance – it’s what comes easiest to us, but it represents the past and not the future.

The Tenth House is all about career and status, and it also has a special association with politics.  This means that someone with the South Node in the Tenth House will feel a natural affinity with politics, and they’ll find it easy to get elected and make a name for themselves.  However it’s too easy, because it represents the past – for example, a previous incarnation, if you believe in that kind of thing.

If we look at Jeffrey Archer’s career, he made at least three attempts to get involved in front-rank politics.

At the age of twenty-nine he was elected to the House of Commons, but less than five years later, in 1974, he left parliament, on the verge of bankruptcy.  He had put too much money into a bad investment, and was forced to switch careers, from politics to writing.

In 1985 he got back into the political limelight, becoming deputy chairman of the Conservative Party.    However he soon resigned, after it was alleged that he had given money to a prostitute.  He won a libel case, but the damage had  been done.  And as it later turned out, he committed perjury during his libel action.

In 1999 Jeffrey Archer was chosen to be Conservative candidate for Mayor of London.  But soon afterwards, his perjury was revealed, and in 2001 he received a prison sentence.

To me, this is personal Karma in action.  At key times in Jeffrey Archer’s life, when he moved into mainstream politics, his path was blocked by events created  by himself.

Collective destiny

Looking at Dominique Strauss-Kahn, and the situation is very different.  In his horoscope he has the  North Node of the Moon conjunct Mars in the Tenth House.  The North Node is the place he should be going to, while Mars is in the planet of assertion and drive.

This means that Strauss-Kahn was absolutely right to be involved in politics, and by aiming for the French Presidency he was moving in the direction of his fundamental destiny.  Under these circumstances, we wouldn’t have expected him to sabotage his own political career.

However we have to be aware that personal destiny has its limits, and when you’re a politician, or a passenger on the Titanic, wider trends can intervene.  It was the destiny of the Titanic to sink, and if you looked at every passenger’s horoscope, you would have expected most of them to have had an uneventful trip.  In the case of politicians, they can influence which way the world goes.  Thousands of people’s lives and destinies can be affected, and the fate of whole nations can be decided.

Strauss-Kahn, as Managing Director of the IMF, could influence what happened to the European currency.  He could also recommend that a country such as Latvia, that needed IMF aid, cut its public spending;  this would in turn lead to massive pay cuts for Latvian public employees.  If he had become President of France, he would have dictated French economic, domestic and foreign policy.  His decisions would have had an impact not just on France, but also on the European Union.

Given all this, it’s not enough to have a great chart to become French President.  And it’s certainly not enough to have the North Node in the Tenth House.  No, you have to be the right person, at the right time, at the right place.  For some reason the Universe found it unacceptable for Dominique Strauss-Kahn to be French President, so it created a situation whereby his fundamental destiny was disrupted.  Perhaps the Euro was supposed to go in a direction that it wouldn’t go in if the Managing Director of the IMF wasn’t disgraced.  Or maybe the French nation had a particular destiny, that couldn’t be fulfilled with Strauss-Kahn as its President.  It’s not that there’s anything wrong with his ambitions, or his policies.  It’s just that they’re out of step with the times.

Why?

Fifth Republic’s Sun: 11 degrees 12 minutes Libra

Saturn at the time of Strauss-Kahn’s alleged offence: 11 degrees 9 minutes Libra

Strauss-Kahn’s Moon: 3 degrees 1 minute Aries

Uranus at the time of Strauss-Kahn’s alleged offence: 3 degrees 20 minutes Aries

We then have the question of why the Universe did what it did.  It would arguably have been much simpler if Dominique Strauss-Kahn had had a massive heart attack and died.  However from a collective point of view that might have been too dignified.  The scandal and humiliation of his arrest could cause real damage to the European cause.  Maybe also, there was some aspect of the French psyche, relating to women, that needed to be released into the open through a process of national heart-searching.

In this light, as I pointed out in a previous article, on the weekend of Dominique Strauss-Kahn’s alleged offence, Saturn in the sky was exactly conjunct the Libran Sun in the horoscope for the French Fifth Republic, set for October 5 1958.  Some big event had to happen in France, that would bring the country down to Earth.  The fate of the individual is nothing compared with the fate of a nation, and Strauss-Kahn was the fall-guy.

Perhaps the Universe realised that women were Strauss-Kahn’s weakness, and at some level he seemed to know what was in store for him.  At the end of April, weeks before his alleged offence took place, he said that he imagined ‘a woman who had been raped in a car park and who was offered between 500,000 and 1,000,000 Euros to make up such a story’.

He knew the risks, yet he couldn’t prevent the events from unfolding.  As Saturn moved onto the Fifth Republic’s Sun, Uranus moved onto the precise degree of his Moon, at three degrees Aries, and he had the fateful encounter that destroyed his career.

Whether this encounter was consensual or not, whether he’ll be found guilty or innocent, it doesn’t really matter.  His actions wrecked everything.

It’s tempting to use that famous maxim, ‘Those whom the gods wish to destroy they first make mad.’  However I don’t think it was anything personal – I think it was more a case of ‘Those institutions the gods wish to destroy they first make their leaders commit acts of madness’.

So it’s in this sense that Dominique Strauss-Kahn is innocent.  Whether he is legally guilty or innocent, he was put in a situation where he probably couldn’t help himself, and ironically the fact that he was politically powerful made the situation worse.  Because in this world, the greater one’s power, the more interest the Universe will take in you, and the more likely it is that the Universe will sacrifice you, for some higher, strategic purpose.

When does the Age of Aquarius start?

Constellation of Aquarius

The Age of Aquarius is supposed to start soon.  Indeed some people say that it has already started.  They point to humanity’s elevated consciousness, as well as to a general dissatisfaction with traditional approaches to spirituality.  However if you look at the facts, it’s quite clear that the Age of Aquarius doesn’t start for centuries.

Unfortunately, the key facts relate to astronomy rather than astrology, but I’ll nonetheless try to keep things simple.

There is a phenomenon known as ‘the precession of the equinoxes’.  At the exact time of the Spring Equinox, which is in late March in the Northern Hemisphere, you can map the position of the Sun, from the Earth’s point of view, onto the background of the stars.

Every year, against this background, the Sun’s position will show some slippage, that amounts to one degree every seventy-two years.  The slippage adds up, and after 25,771 years, it will have slipped back a full circle, of 360 degrees.

The Sun’s Spring Equinox position is broadly speaking related to the constellations, and it will take 2148 years to go through each of the twelve signs of the Zodiac.  Yet this is something of an approximation, because the constellations are of unequal length.

This means, if one is a purist,  that the Pisces-Aquarius changeover won’t happen until close on AD 3000.  This is because the constellation of Pisces is huge, and right now, at the time of the Spring Equinox, the Sun is in the middle of this constellation.  It won’t start leaving Pisces, and moving into Aquarius, for another eight hundred years.  In other words, the Age of Aquarius won’t start until at least AD 2800.

However I think the purist approach is too extreme.  The astrological ages should be of equal length, even if this means having a certain disconnect with the real constellations.  We can therefore say that every 2148 years we’ll move from one age to another.

Our next task is to work out what date the Age of Pisces, which we’re still in, actually started.

To do this, we need a precise measure of the slippage that has taken place since the Sun’s equinoctial position first moved into Pisces.  In astrological jargon, this measure is called ‘the ayanamsa’.

One ayanamsa that’s popular amongst Western astrologers is the Fagan-Bradley ayanamsa.   On January 1 2010 the Fagan-Bradley ayanamsa gives the slippage as 24 degrees and 53 minutes.  When we convert this to time, we discover that the Age of Pisces started at the beginning of the Third Century AD – I make it around AD 228.  This means that the Age of Aquarius doesn’t start until AD 2376, which isn’t for another 366 years.

So the start of the Age of Pisces coincided with the rapid growth of Christianity, and it heralded that key historical event, the conversion of  the Roman Emperor Constantine to Christianity, at the beginning of the Fourth Century AD.

As we look at the Age of Pisces unfolding, Christianity goes from strength to strength, though its advance is eventually checked by the rise of Islam.  And of course both Christianity and Islam put a high premium on martyrdom.  That’s a very Piscean concept, sacrificing one’s life for the sake of a high purpose.

Yet some people would say that Christianity is running out of steam, at least in North America and Western Europe.  Isn’t this a sign that the Age of Pisces is coming to an end, that the Age of Aquarius is just round the corner?

However if you look at some of the ‘new age’ replacements for Christianity, they embody many of the features of the sign Pisces.  Fuzzy and chaotic thinking, and the embracing of new and old fads without asking too many questions.  Crystal healing, channelling, dancing with nature, it’s all part of the Age of Pisces experience.

It should also be said that the new age movement has got very little to do with the sign Aquarius.  After all, Aquarius is a tough sign, that’s ruled by Saturn.  It’s also a sign that’s rational, that puts the head before the heart.  And in many cases, the sign Aquarius has a tyrannical streak.  But not to worry.  By the time the Age of Aquarius starts, all of us will be long dead.
