Pisces of the week: Gestapo chief Reinhard Heydrich

Reinhard Heydrich

The Nazis were pretty evil, but who was the most evil of them all?  You could say Adolf Hitler, but he perhaps had mitigating circumstances.  He had a messed up childhood, and as a young adult he lived in poverty.  That doesn’t excuse his behaviour, but it provides some logic and reason for it.  Hitler’s upbringing was very different to that of Reinhard Heydrich, the architect of the holocaust.  Heydrich was a man of high intelligence, and also an accomplished violinist, whose father was an opera singer and composer.  While it’s true that Heydrich’s family suffered in the economic melt-down immediately following the First World War, the same was true for most Germans.  In other words, Heydrich had no excuse, and he must surely be regarded as the most evil Nazi.

Before looking at Heydrich’s horoscope, one should perhaps consider his star sign.  Pisces has a reputation for being emotional, and for drifting off into a cloud of fantasy.  It’s also a sign that can be very creative.  So if you see someone playing a violin beautifully, you’re not surprised when you are told that their sun sign is Pisces.  Einstein was also a Pisces, and he played the violin.  However, if you want to be a successful Pisces, you need to dedicate yourself to something, hook, line and sinker.  You might dedicate yourself to physics, or world peace, or the quest for enlightenment… or to a political ideology.  It’s about jumping into the water, without asking questions.  In Heydrich’s case, he dedicated himself to Nazism.

Reinhard Heydrich was born on March 7 1904, in Halle, Germany, at 3.00 pm.  Here is his horoscope:

Horoscope of Reinhard Heydrich.

The horoscope is a bit cluttered, because I include Witte’s hypothetical planets.  But you can see that most of the traditional planets are in the south western quadrant.  The southern quadrant is about being out there in the world, the western quadrant is about other people.  Heydrich may have been head of the Gestapo, but at some level he was a follower – whether to Nazism in general or to Adolf Hitler in particular.

Although Heydrich was evil, he was also courageous.  Many senior Nazis steered clear of danger, but not him.  He was a Luftwaffe pilot, who flew in combat during the invasions of Poland and the Soviet Union.  Indeed on one occasion his plane was shot down over Russia, but he managed to get back to his own lines.  He wasn’t so lucky on May 27 1942, when a two-man assassination team intercepted his open-topped Mercedes, in Prague, the capital of the modern day Czech Republic.  The first assassin, Jozef Gabčík, stood in front of his car, and tried to fire his machine gun at him.  The gun jammed.  At this stage Heydrich should have told his driver to speed away.  Instead he ordered the driver to stop, so that he could chase his would-be killers.  The second assassin, Jan Kubiš, then threw a bomb at his car, which mortally wounded him.

It is not difficult to see the courage in his horoscope – Mars and Jupiter in Aries.  Mars in Aries is the archetypal warror, and it enjoys a fight.  Though probably Mars is too strong for its own good.  Yes, it is a masculine planet, that does well in the sign of its rulership.  However it functions best in a nocturnal horoscope.  In a diurnal chart we have overkill – particularly as Mars is the planet in the chart closest to the Midheaven.  Very often we see that a planet so placed has a noticeable impact, and in Heydrich’s case he was dominated by the Mars archetype.

There is then the question of why Heydrich was so good at his job.  It was a pretty awful job, creating networks of informers and developing a system of annihilation and terror.  But unfortunately, some people are good at this kind of work.  The Sun in Pisces in the Eighth House, square Pluto in Gemini, had a good understanding of what made people tick, and Heydrich enjoyed the power games involved in being an intelligence chief.  Pisces can deceive and obfuscate, and in one successful operation Heydrich was able to pass false information to the Soviet Union that some of their top generals were conspiring against the government.  This led to purges and arrests, which weakened the Soviet Union’s ability to defend itself.

Probably the most important aspect in Heydrich’s horoscope is the conjunction between Venus and Saturn, in Aquarius.  The conjunction is bang on the Descendant.  The fact that Heydrich had an angular Saturn in the sign of its rulership would give him the capacity for hard work, but the conjunction with Venus allowed him to suppress human feelings.  It also suggested that relationships were an issue.  In terms of his early career this makes sense.  He had to leave the Navy because he broke off an already consummated marital engagement, and this breach of promise was considered to be dishonourable.  In general, Heydrich had numerous affairs, and visited prostitutes right through his career.  Talking about prostitution, he even set up a brothel in Berlin, called Salon Kitty, for the purpose of gathering intelligence.  This underlines the point that prostitution is a Venus-Saturn profession.

One planet I find particularly interesting is Hades, the planet of garbage, death and low-life.  Here is Heydrich’s 45-degree Hades midpoint tree:

Heydrich Hades

The Hades midpoint tree represents all the midpoints that Hades is making a hard aspect to, and on the right are the orbs.  But I only want to concentrate on the conjunctions.  If you look at Hedydrich’s horoscope, you’ll see that his Hades conjunct the Venus-Mars and Mars-Saturn midpoints.  Hades on the Venus-Mars midpoint is relatively easy to interpret – Venus-Mars is about sex, Hades is about low-life, and when you put it together you get sex with prostitutes.  Witte’s description is even better: “Illicit intercourse.  Misfortune and unpleasantness with or through intimate acquaintances or relatives”.  That perfectly describes the circumstances of his dismissal from the Navy, on an honour charge.

It is worth talking a bit more about Heydrich’s dismissal from the Navy.  The event that triggered it was a meeting with his future wife Lina, which meant that he broke off a previous engagement.  This happened in December 1930, so I’ll go for a mid-December date of December 15.  At this time, Heydrich’s solar arc directed Venus was at 11 degrees 47 minutes Pisces.  The orb was not exact, but it was pretty close.  Here are the relevant points:

Heydrich various

Heydrich’s dismissal from the Navy led to him joining the Nazi party, and the unleashing of the full potential of Hades on the Mars-Saturn midpoint.  Mars and Saturn are the lesser and greater malefics, and together they are the death pair.  If you have Hades on the Saturn-Mars midpoint you have the capacity for causing enormous destruction.

As far as Heydrich’s death is concerned, he was assassinated when solar arc directed Pluto was at 26 degrees 30 Cancer – in other words, making an exact sesquiquadrate to his Mars-Saturn midpoint.  Pluto hitting the Mars-Saturn midpoint perhaps tells us about the quality of his death.  Pluto is something hidden and destructive, such as bacteria.  Heydrich died because some of horsehair in the seat of the Mercedes had been blown into his body, and as a result he got sepsis.  He died in hospital about a week after the attack.

Heydrich’s meeting with Lina happened when he was 26 years old.  He was dismissed from the Navy in April 1931, when he had just turned 27.  However, the dismissal was a culmination of events – the action happened when he was 26.  By the time of his 27th birthday, his career in the Navy was effectively over.  Why is this important?  Well, a classical technique that has become popular among traditional astrologers is the annual profection, where you have a planet ruling each year.  The years start from birth, with the Ascendant.  So Heydrich had Leo rising, which means up until his first birthday his year ruler was the Sun.  The next sign after Leo is Virgo, so the ruler from the first to the second birthday was Mercury.

When Heydrich hit 26, we have moved around to Libra.  So the ruler is Venus.  His Venus is prominent in his horoscope, but it is conjunct Saturn.  In other words, it is going to be a bad year, and it may well be characterized by the Venus-Saturn conjunction – relationships with women causing problems.  Let’s now fast forward 12 years.  On March 7 1942 Heydrich celebrated his 38th birthday, and Venus again became his year ruler.  The Venus-Saturn conjunction again becomes promient, and we can see that Heydrich’s enemies were strong – after all, Saturn is the ruler of the Seventh House.  It should also be said that in traditional astrology the Seventh  has a connection with death.

Here’s the solar return for his 42nd birthday, set for Halle:

Heydrich 1942 solar return

Venus is angular, on the IC, opposition Pluto. Now you might say that having Venus on the IC is good for a solar return, especially as it is in mutual reception with Saturn, by sign.  However one has to wonder how useful the reception really was – Saturn is conjunct the Eighth House cusp.  Indeed the Venus-Saturn reception may reinforce the malefic theme of the natal chart.  And Venus’ angularity, in a year ruled by an afflicted Venus, might actually have been a signature of death.

We can get further clues by looking at lunar returns.  However, such an approach wouldn’t have saved Heydrich, if he had been read to listen to astrologers.  This is because an astrologer would have told him that the lunar return starting on May 29 was the one to worry about.  Yes, he was still alive on May 29 1942, but the attack that killed him happened two days early.  Here’s the May 29 return:

Heydrich Lunar Return, May 29 1942

The signature is simple.  Venus is on the Descendant, like in the natal chart.  It is also in Aries, the sign of its detriment.  We don’t even have to look at the packed Eighth House to get a sniff of impending death.

There are still lots of things to say about Reinhard Heydrich’s horoscope, and I have only managed to cover things that are of immediate interest.  The chart reminds us of the important of angularity, with the Venus-Saturn conjunction on the Descendant dominating the horoscope.  It is suggests that midpoints can be useful, even those involving hypothetical planets.  Finally, Heydrich’s chart powerful evidence that annual profections can be a useful technique.

Astrology for the week starting on Monday March 2 2020

Covid-19It’s just plain astrology this week.  I was going to do the horoscopes for the twelve signs, but I spent all day tutoring statistics.   Though I suppose with Covid-19, making predictions has become easier.  March is going to be a quiet month, where you’re not going to travel as much as usual.  And you’ll find yourself avoiding crowds.  Plans you made for the month ahead may have to be put on hold, perhaps until the early Summer.  And if you’re a single [Aries through to Pisces], don’t get your hopes up, unless you’re in front of your computer, looking for an online romance.

For myself, my love affair with Hades continues.  It’s the hypothetical planet created by the German astrologer Alfred Witte over a 100 years ago.  The planet makes no sense whatsoever, and I have no doubt that it doesn’t exist.  Yet I have also no doubts that it works.  It’s dark and Lovecraftian, a reminder that the worst horrors are the ones we create ourselves.  As I have mentioned in recent articles, Hades was on the Midheaven, conjunction the North Node, in the New Year horoscopes for 2020 in most capital cities around the world.  It’s an encouter with death and destruction, which has found form with Covid-19.

As far as this week is concerned, Mercury continues its retrograde movement, and in midweek it moves from Pisces back to Aquarius.  Mercury works better in Aquarius than Pisces, especially by night, and some of us will get our sanity back.  It’ll be easier to be logical, and we can gain a modicum of detachment.  However, we’re still in a situation where if it can go wrong it will go wrong.

Meanwhile, Jupiter and Saturn are getting closer and closer together, and at the end of the week they are only 8 degrees apart.  Eight degrees is important, because it is the orb that many astrologers take for major aspects.  There really is a Jupiter-Saturn conjunction, though it doesn’t become exact until the end of December.  A cycle that started in the year 2000 is coming to an end, and the old certainties should be put to rest.  Things that right now are the height of fashion are about to lose their shine, and if we don’t want to be obsolete we need to move fast.  But that doesn’t bother me –  I’ve been obsolete for decades.

The personality of Aries politician Priti Patel

https://members.parliament.uk/member/4066/portraitPriti Patel is the British Home Secretary.  This means she is responsible for things like prisons, the police and immigration control.  She comes from a Hindu background, and her parents were ethnic Indians forced out of Uganda by Idi Amin in the early 1970s.  In terms of politics she is a right-winger, who supported Britain leaving the European Union, and who in the past had supported the reintroduction of the death penalty.

A few years back, when she was in charge of the International Development department, she was forced out for having unauthorized and secret contact with Israeli government officials.  So it is reasonable to think that she is pro-Israel.  More recently, there is a controversy about her treatment of Sir Philip  Rutnam, a senior civil servant in the Home Office. He was quoted in the The Guardian as saying that he was a “target of [a] vicious and orchestrated campaign against him”, “orchestrated” by Priti Patel.

The Guardian has now published an article which attempts to uncover the true Priti Patel.  I have copied from this article 12 quotations, which give an idea about what kind of person she is supposed to be.  It should be noted that The Guardian is a leftwing newspaper, that is no friend of the current Home Secretary.  Here are the quotes:

1. “The story goes like this: when the news that Priti Patel had stepped down as international development secretary spread through her department, some civil servants burst into an impromptu singalong of Ding Dong! The Witch is Dead”.

2. “While largely told secondhand, the vignette illustrates a current political truth about Patel, that someone who not many years ago was regularly tipped as a future prime minister is now among the most divisive figures in Westminster”.

3. “Some former colleagues, even opposition MPs, speak of her as approachable, friendly and self-deprecating. But certain civil servants and officials tell a very different story”.

4. “While the word ‘bullying’ is used, with her it’s not really personal, as if she took a dislike to certain people, it was her typical manner. One minute she would come across rude or ungrateful, and another she would be being dismissive or hostile in the face of advice”.

5. “I think she’s been careful about how she’s presented herself all these years. And she can be the most charming person, people feel drawn to her.”

6. “A reputation for being a bully”.

7. “Notorious for being very nice, friendly and happy to help”.

8. “A career-long Eurosceptic, she holds views on law and order sufficiently robust that she famously spoke in favour of the death penalty on the BBC’s Question Time in 2011, a view she now disowns”.

9.”While she is, in ministerial terms, just one step away from No 10, Patel is now rarely talked about as a future PM, despite a capacity for hard work and the ability, even acknowledged by her enemies, to be hugely charming”.

10. “Nice, normal and fun… she always seemed like one of those MPs who doesn’t take it all too seriously…”.

11. “The lowering of expectations for her career seems to have several causes. One is a seeming capacity for political misjudgment, notably her extracurricular visit to Israel, which baffled and outraged May and her team”.

12. “She is an extremely motivated and demanding boss, sure, but also incredibly kind… the allegations of bullying [are] ridiculous”.

We can extract from these quotations a number of keywords, which I have ordered from least to most favourable. The ordering reflects my bias about the desirability of the listed descriptions and qualities:

Witch

Bully

Rude

Ungrateful

Dismissive

Hostile

Divisive

Misjudgement

Demanding

Hard work[ing]

Motivated

Fun

Self-deprecating

Help[ful]

Charming

Approachable

Nice

Friendly

Let’s now set up Priti Patel’s horoscope.  I don’t know her time of birth, so it is set for March 29 1972, in London, at Midday:

Priti Patel’s horoscope does bear out some of the negative comments about her.  She has no planets in Water signs – in other words, nothing in Cancer, Scorpio or Pisces.  People with no Water can be harsh, and they can miss the emotional niceties that help human relations run smoothly.  When you throw in the Sun and Mercury in Aries, you get the picture of someone who wants to act now this minute, without fully understanding how other people are going to respond.  Bear in mind also that Mercury in Aries just says what’s on its mind, without thinking too much about the consequences.

There are other signatures of harshness.  Priti Patel has a Mars-Saturn conjunction in Gemini.  People with Mars-Saturn conjunctions often see the world as a tough place, where you have to struggle to keep your head above water.  Then you have her Jupiter in Capricorn.  Jupiter is fallen in Capricorn, and people with this placement often focus on material and practical things, in a way that can seem mean and selfish.  Adolf Hitler and Margaret Thatcher both had Jupiter in Capricorn.

We can now start to put together the negative key words that have been associated with her.  Someone who is a bully, who is rude, hostile and divisive.  Yes, Aries wants its way, and Mercury in Aries and Mars in Gemini can communicate in a way that causes a lot of hurt.  Mars in Gemini can also be divisive, particularly if it is conjunct Saturn.  Gemini is probably the most divisive sign of the Zodiac – it likes to split and categorize.  So a lot of Patel’s energies may go into creating divisions, and perhaps seeing things in terms of friends and enemies.

And we then have the witch.  I remember when Margaret Thatcher was Prime Minister, wondering what would happen if I threw a bucket of water at her.  Perhaps, like the Wicked Witch of the West in The Wizard of Oz, she would have dissolved.  And if I had been arrested for soaking the then Prime Minister, would I have been charged with attempted murder, it it could be shown that I had the intention of killing her?  I wasn’t the only one who associated Margaret Thatcher with the Wicked Witch of the West, and when she died many on the left chanted Ding Dong the Witch is Dead, like the Munchkins in the movie.

But we do have to be careful about using the word “witch”.  It is a word that is exclusively used to describe women, and it is  without doubt derogatory.  In the context of Priti Patel and Margaret Thatcher, they are described as witches because they are or were in positions of power, and female leaders have to deal with the kind of double standards described by Alice Eagly and Steven Karau in their 2002 paper “Role Congruity Theory of Prejudice Toward Female Leaders”.  Essentially, female leaders are treated by a different set of standards than male ones.  Male leaders are allowed to be tough and agentic, but female leaders are not.  Instead, females in positions of power are supposed to be collaborative in their leadership, and perhaps also touchy-feel.  And when female leaders behave against society’s gender expectations, they often get slammed. Indeed, they sometimes get called witches.

Yet it we compare Margaret Thatcher and Priti Patel’s charts, we do notice that Thatcher had one traditional planet in a Water sign – which was Saturn in Scorpio.  It was better than nothing.  This compares with Priti Patel’s total absence of Water, which leads to the keyword of “misjudgement”.  Her misjudgements are, I believe, about her inability to fully understand the emotional environment in which she works.  People have feelings, and she has to make a greater effort to listen to them.  Or get someone else to do it for her.

As far as the positive traits are concerned, someone has described her as “fun”.  She has a Sun-Mercury conjunction in Aries.  This conjunction will exacerbate her capacity for misjudgement, but it will also give her personality a fiery dynamism, which could make her an exciting and fun person to have around.  Though we shouldn’t forget her Jupiter in Capricorn.  Fun has its limits, and she never forgets the hard work that needs to be done.

Going back to Aries, I want to return to a critical quotation from The Guardian: “While the word ‘bullying’ is used, with her it’s not really personal, as if she took a dislike to certain people, it was her typical manner”.  This fits an Aries who has no Water.  Aries is a fast moving sign, which doesn’t have time to have personal grudges.  She doesn’t bully because she doesn’t like someone, it is because they are trying to slow her down.

We then have to explain the helpful, charming, approachable and nice side of Priti Patel’s personality.  Well, she was born on the day of a Full Moon.  The definition of a Full Moon is when the Sun and Moon are opposition each other, from the Earth’s perspective.  Her Sun is in Aries, her Moon in the opposite sign of Libra.  Or should I say it is probably in Libra.  If she was born after 2.42 am local time it would be in Libra, so there is close to a 90% chance of her having the Moon in this sign, rather than the previous one of Virgo.

Anyway, assuming she was born after 2.42 am, we have a Full Moon personality, who switches between the traits of Sun in Aries and the Moon in Libra.  This happens with Full Moon people – they move from one sign to another, very quickly.  One moment she can be Aries, desperate to get her way as fast as possible, the next moment Libra, accomodating and approachable.  I believe that this dichotomy is the fundamental issue that the The Guardian article was struggling to explain.

The Triumph of DeathThe Gates of hell.  At least that’s what it feels like right now.  I talked to a friend in London, and she’s talking about stocking up on food, in preparation for the Covid-19 disaster.  I got off the phone, and my wife was wondering whether we should stock up on face masks before it’s too late.  And then I see the Dow Jones is down yet another 1000 points.  In fact everything is down: stocks, gold, silver, Bitcoin.

My friend wanted to know about the astrology of the situation.  Well, I did know that 2020 was going to be a bad year, though I wasn’t thinking any particular scenario.  On January 1, at the stroke of midnight, the hypothetical planet Hades was conjunct the North Node, conjunct the Midheaven.  And because New Years always start at midnight, the conjunction was on the Midheaven across the globe.  Hades is the planet of death and garbage, the nodes are to do with social connections, so with 20-20 hindsight, one cab can connect this signature with an epidemic.

In my blog posts I do want to discuss the stock market and the unfolding crisis.  As I will argue over the cominng weeks and months, what really matters is the Jupiter-Saturn conjunction, which happens in December.  We’re already in the run up to this conjunction, and I think we’re seeing the first effects.  However in this post, I want to say a few words about Jupiter, and how it relates to global events.

Jupiter is the planet of expansion, and it is always looking for new horizons.  So when we study a horoscope, we can look at Jupiter to see where someone seeks to expand.  However, some placements are better than others.  The best signs for Jupiter are probably Cancer, Sagittarius and Pisces.  Jupiter is exalted in Cancer, and it rules Sagittarius and Pisces.  On the other hand, Jupiter is weak in Capricorn, the sign of its fall, and also in Gemini and Virgo, the signs of its detriment.

It makes sense for Jupiter not to work in Capricorn.  The expansive, optimistic energy of Jupiter is channelled into the materialistic, pessimistic sign of Capricorn.  Of course I understand that that is a generalization, and not everyone with Jupiter in Capricorn is mean-minded and obsessed with acquistion for the sake of it.  However, it should be noted that both Adolf Hiter and Margaret Thatcher had Capricorn Jupiters.

In terms of society, Jupiter’s movement into Capricorn is not healthy.  It is a time when people’s expansive energy goes into dead matter, and at the same time there can be worries about money.  On December 18 2007 Jupter entered Capricorn, and it stayed there until January 5 2009.  Below is a chart of the Standard and Poor stock market index, mapped against these dates:

Jupter and the markets - 2008

If you had gone short the market the moment Jupiter went into Capricorn on December 18 2007, and stayed short until January 5 2009, you would have made a lot of money.  As you can see, the market carried on going down as Jupiter moved through the early degrees of Aquarius, but you would have caught around 80% of the downward movement.

Jupiter has a twelve year cycle, and the next time it went into Capricorn was on December 2 2020.  Here’s the chart so far:

Jupiter in Capricorn 2020

Shorting the market on December 2 2020 would not have been a good idea, though with the falls over the last few days your short position would almost be breaking even.  The question now is what happens next.  If we follow the 2008 pattern, we might expect the market to fall until December, when Jupiter enters Aquarius.  But I am not saying it is going to work like that.  For example, here’s the graph when Jupiter was in Capricorn between January 3 1996 and January 21 1997:

Jupiter in Capricorn, 1996-1997

This underlines the point that you can’t rely on a single astrological significator.  You also have to consider that 1996, like 2000, was an election year.  Clinton was doing what he could to win re-election, like Trump is now doing in 2020.  Trump is frantic to win in November, and he’ll be pulling out all the stops to get the votes.  Maybe with a few more cuts in interest rates he can push the stock market back into positive territory.  However, Covid-19 doesn’t take its orders from the White House.

Anyway, I have laid down a declaration of intent.  In future posts I will be going into further detail about Covid-19, Donald Trump and the stock market.  The gates of hell are certainly opening, and we should remember that however bad things are, they can always get worse.  Have a nice Friday!

The horoscope of Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier

Michel BarnierBritain left the European Union on January 31 2020.  However that was not the end of the story.  Britain has now entered a transition period, lasting until December 31.  During this 11-month period nothing much will change, at least in terms of  trade, customs and the freedom of movement.  However, there will be frantic negotiations between Britain and the EU, to patch together a trade deal by the December 31 deadline.  Otherwise Britain will crash out of the bloc without a deal.  This could have major economic consequences on both sides of the English Channel.

The man charged with leading Europe’s trade negotiations is Michel Barnier.  He works for the EU, and his official title is Head of Task Force for Relations with the United Kingdom.  It is going to be a tough job.  The British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, has got a large parliamentary majority, and unlike his predecessor, he appears unwilling to compromise his core position.  Barnier has the delicate task of representing 27 different countries, and he also has to be mindful of the EU’s political and economic interests.  If Britain’s gets too good a deal, and makes a success of Brexit, this could undermine the European project.  On the other hand, if Britain walks away with no deal, hundreds of thousands of European workers could be adversely affected.  This is partly because EU countries export more to Britain than Britain exports to the EU.  If, for example, Britain puts tariffs on German cars, then the already struggling German car industry could be seriously damaged.

Michel Barnier was born on January 9 1951, at 4.40 pm, in La Tronche, France.  Here is his horoscope:

Michel Barnier's horoscope

The first thing to notice about his horoscope is that he is a Saturnine character, with five personal planets in Saturn-ruled signs.  He has the Moon, Venus and Mars in Aquarius, and the Sun and Mercury in Capricorn.  Barnier therefore has a calculating and intelligent approach, and he understands the importance of patience.  And with the Aquarius planets in the Eighth House, he is not afraid of getting involved in legal and financial details.

The fact that Barnier has the Sun in the Seventh House means that he is a good negotatior.  From an intellectual perspective he understands the other person’s point of view, even if he doesn’t fully grap the emotional undercurrents.  It also seems that Barnier is capable of being secretive, and he is probably in his element when he is involved in behind the scenes discussions and planning.  Afther all, he has a strong Eighth House, and his Sun is making a stressful aspect to Neptune.  This means that those negotiating with him shouldn’t necessarily take what he says at face value.  They should also ask who else he is talking to.

Two other aspects of note are an opposition aspect between Mars and Pluto, and a square aspect between Mercury and Saturn.  The Mars-Pluto aspect is the quest for power, and perhaps even domination.  The Mercury-Saturn square is certainly deep-thinking, but it can also be caustic – I suspect that Barnier can be very cutting if you’re having an argument with him.  Yet Mercury-Saturn can also be pessimistic, and it is capable of seeing the worst in a situation.

Possibly the strongest planet in Barnier’s chart is his Jupiter in Pisces in the Ninth House.  The Ninth House represents foreign contacts, so by living and working on the international stage he is fulfilling the potential of this placement.  However, we shouldn’t forget that Jupiter is a planet that can be doctrinaire.  It has a belief and a philosophy about the world, which it is not prepared to compromise.  In Barnier’s case, the idea of Europe is important, and he has the arguments to prove it.

Right now, Barnier is gearing up for formal negotiations with the UK, which begin on March 2.  On this day, Jupiter will be at around 19 degrees 45 minutes Capricorn.  This means Jupiter is just past his natal Sun, which is at 18 35 Capricorn.  It is also transitting his Seventh House.  On the surface this bodes well.  Barnier is the negotiator, and with transitting Jupiter moving through his Seventh House his many talents will move into top gear.

Yet I am not convinced that he’ll have much fun.  On March 22 Saturn moves into Aquarius, and on May 11 it goes retrograde, just short of Barnier’s Venus at 2 13 Aquarius.  I think the negotiation process will become tedious, even soul-destroying.  And I also think that by the early Summer Barnier’s Gallic civility will  be starting to fray.  Matters won’t be helped by an appulse lunar eclipse on July 5, bang on his ascendant-descendant axis.  The whole process will take its toll.

Looking at Barnier’s horoscope from a Vedic perspective, and we notice that his Moon, Venus and Mars go back into sidereal Capricorn.  At the end of January Saturn went into sidereal Capricorn, and therefore made the sign-to-sign opposition to these three planets.  This will last for a couple of years, and it is the peak of his sade sati period, when Saturn is in the Moon’s sign.  In a previous article I mentioned that Scottish leader Nicola Sturgeon is also in a sade sati period.  Barnier’s horoscope is nothing like as afflicted as her’s, but the sade sati issues are still going to be difficult to deal with.

Overall, I don’t think Michel Barnier is going to enjoy the Brexit negotiations.  They won’t be as fun as they were when Theresa May was British Prime Minister, and he may find it difficult to move things the way he’d like to.  Perhaps he should just spare himself the aggravation, and hand things over to someone else.
