In my blog posts, I do occasionally comment on Scotland. Maybe it’s because of my Scottish roots. From an astrological point of view, Scotland is a Cancerian country. Robert the Bruce, Scotland’s greatest hero, who defeated the English at the Battle of Bannockburn on June 24 1314, was a Cancerian. The battle itself took place when the Sun was in Cancer. I suppose if you want to stereotype Scotland, you think of clans – and family-oriented Cancer is the most clannish sign of them all.
Scottish nationalism has been around for some time, and the National Party of Scotland was founded on June 23 1928, with a Cancer Sun. It merged into the Scottish National Party, on April 7 1934. The SNP is therefoe not a Cancerian organization. It has the Sun in Aries, conjunct Mars. It’s a conjunction that’s very dynamic and angry, that acts first and thinks later. Here’s is the chart, set for noon in Glasgow:
The chart shows a cardinal grand cross. Jupiter is opposition the Sun and Mars, and the Moon-Pluto opposition is square them. Energy and frustration, that has Pluto in Cancer as its focus: the transformation of Scotland.
Probably the most successful leader of the SNP was Alex Salmond. As First Minister of Scotland he saw through the 2014 referendum on independence. His chart is below:
In many respects it’s a wonderful chart. Jupiter is in Cancer, the sign of its exaltation, in mutual reception to the Moon in Pisces in the Tenth House. Salmond’s Jupiter is closely conjunct Uranus, and together these planets embody the idea of freedom. This conjunction is in turn conjunct the Pluto in the SNP’s inauguration chart. If anyone was going to deliver independence, it was Alex Salmond.
As it happened the Scots voted against independence, and two months after the vote Salmond stood down as First Minister. On September 18 2014, the day of the referendum, Saurn was at around 19 degrees 22 minutes Scorpio – meaning that he was still experiencing his Saturn Return, with Saturn close to where it was at his birth. Furthermore his solar arc directed Saturn was at 18 degrees and 52 minutes Capricorn, exactly on his descendant.
From a psychological point of view, Salmond’s Capricorn descendant is interesting. The descendant is the other, the opponent, the thing which needs to be beaten. England is a Capricorn country, which had its inception the coronation of William the Conqueror on December 25 1066. Salmon has his Sun in Capricorn, and because of his nighttime birth, one might actually see his Sun as being representative of the enemy. Especially as December 25 1066, when adjusted to the Gregorian Calendar, becomes December 31, which is Salmond’s birthday.
Turning to Alex Salmond’s Vedic horoscope, and we get a different picture:
His Vedic Seventh House is covered by Sagittarius, and he has the North Node, the Sun, and Mercury in this sign. On April 23 2016 he entered the Mercury sub-period of Venus, which lasts until February 22 2019. In itself this period needn’t be too bad, especially as his Venus, ruler of the major period, is the strongest planet in his Vedic horoscope. However on January 26 2017 Saturn entered sidereal Sagittarius, where it stayed until June 20 2017. This was important for two reasons. Firstly it was damaging Salmond’s Mercury in sidereal Sagittarius, secondly it was in the Tenth House from the Moon, and therefore damaging his career. So it was hardly surprising that on June 8 2017, when there was a general election, he lost his parliamentary seat.
On October 26 2017 Saturn returned to Sagittarius. Alex Salmond’s troubles continued, and recently there have been allegations of sexual harassment levelled against him – allegations which he has vociferously denied. The issue is possibly having a negative impact on the SNP, with The Guardian reporting that “Within the ranks of the SNP a civil war has brewed, with people either backing Salmond or seeking to condemn him based on their pre-existing loyalties”. How very clannish, how very Scottish!
The final horoscope to look at is that of Nicola Sturgeon, Salmond’s successor as Scottish First Minister. She was born on July 19 1970, at 3.16 pm, in Irvine, Scotland. So very appropriately, we have a Cancerian. However, I want to concentrate on her Vedic chart:
On September 14 2018 Sturgeon moves into a 19-year phase of life that is ruled by Saturn. It’s a big change, which is almost certainly not for the better. Her Saturn is poorly placed, in Aries, the sign of is fall. Her enemies will get stronger, and increasingly she’ll be a loser rather than a winner. Matters are made worse by the fact that she is in sadhesati, the seven-year period when Saturn is in signs adjoining or covering the Moon. Sadhesati is not always a problem, but in Sturgeon’s case you have to conside the impact of the Saturn major period.
Nicola Sturgeon is the leader of the SNP and of Scotland. Those she rules are tied to her horoscope. If she remains as First Minister, things are going to fall apart. From January 2020 through to July 2022 things are particularly bad, though in all honesty from September 2018 onwards she’s a political liability. The SNP could get rid of her, or she could withdraw from politics of her own accord, but is that really likely? On the other hand, one might argue that Sturgeon is just a reflection of the fact that the SNP’s control over Scotland is drawing to a close.
