I want to take a quick look at the horoscope of Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the President of Turkey. Over the last few years he has consolidated his power, with his combination of Islam and nationalism. However he is leading his country into an economic crisis. Part of the problem was the availability of cheap credit, and a refusal to put up interest rates. Erdogan even said that high interest rates cause inflation, a view that few economists would agree with. Matters were made worse by Erdogan reneging on an agreement to release an American pastor, which triggered a round of sanctions on Turkish exports to the US.
Erdogan was born on February 26 1954 in Istanbul. The most likely birth time is 4.25 am, but there is no reliable source. Nonetheless, I will proceed with the assumption that 4.25 am is the true time of birth.
At the most basic level, we can say that Erdogan is a Pisces. This makes him sensitive to the national mood, and he can emotionally manipulate those he rules. It is also worth noting that his Sun is in the Second House of money, conjunct Mercury. Mercury is weak, being retrograde in Pisces, the sign of its fall. Mercury is also damaged by the Sun conjunction. Erdogan is therefore not someone who you want to be involved with the fine-tuning of a nation’s economy. On the plus side, Mercury is making a close conjunction to Venus. This gives him a certain charm, that’s probably very useful in terms of internal politics.
Yet it’s the planets above the horizon that grab one’s attention. Mars, which squares the Sun, is perfectly placed. Traditionally it is a nocturnal planet, and it benefits from the fact that it is a nocturnal chart. And nocturnal planets love being above the horizon at night. Mars further benefits from being in Sagittarius, a masculine sign. We have a man who is aggressive and truculent, who knows how to use force to get his way. Additionally, Mars is conjunct the Moon. This would suggest a fairly explosive temper, someone who acts first and thinks later. Saturn is also above the horizon, conjunct the Midheaven in Scorpio. A sallow energy, which cleaves to power almost for the sake of it. The fact that this angular Saturn is devoid of dignity would suggest that Erdogan has a moral deficit.
It is worth nothing that Erdogan’s Moon-Mars conjunct is itself conjunct the fixed star Antares. This configuration is useful if one wants to get to the top, but it creates the potential for violence – which I suppose is not surprising, in his position.
The current crisis in Turkey seems serious, but so far Erdogan has successfully scapegoated outside forces, in particular the US. From the perspective of Indian astrology, Mars is the strongest planet in his chart, if we assume a 4.25 a.m. birth time. On May 16 2016 he entered a seven-year time period rules by Mars, and shortly afterwards there was an unsuccessful coup attempt. I have a feeling he’ll stay in power until 2023. From then on thing get complicated, and I believe that he will start to lose his invulnerability.
