As most Americans are hopefully aware, the State of Arizona has been in the news recently. The state had passed a law, requiring police to question the immigration status of people they stop for good reason. This law has a big problem, in the sense that it encourages racial profiling – for example, if a person ‘looks’ Hispanic a police officer might take the view that there’s a possibility that they’re an illegal immigrant. Not surprisingly, the law has been blocked by a Federal Court.
The State of Arizona is arguably acting as a bellwether for national sentiment – during economic downturns, hostility towards immigrants often rises. Yet it’s also acting independently, setting itself up against the Obama presidency.
Astrologers who calculate their horoscopes by hand will perhaps be familiar with another way in which Arizona expresses its independence. It is the only mainland state not to use Daylight Saving Time. So when the rest of America puts its clock one hour forward in March, in Arizona the time zone remains the same, unless you’re living in the Navaho Nation homeland, where the clocks do go forward.
Which brings me on to the horoscope of Arizona. In astrology just about everything can have a horoscope, provided you know when it starts. As we’re talking about Arizona the state, then the horoscope is set for the moment statehood was conferred; it was on February 14 1912, when President William Taft signed a bill making Arizona the forty-eighth state.
So surprise, surprise, Arizona has Aquarius as its star sign. In astrology Aquarius has a reputation for being independent-minded, for flying in the face of accepted opinion. The state doesn’t put its clocks forward in the spring, almost as a matter of pride, and it doesn’t care if its new immigration law undermines people’s constitutional rights.
And one high-profile supporter of Arizona’s new law is Sarah Palin, who has a February 11 birth date, and therefore shares Arizona’s star sign.
Looking in greater depth at Arizona’s horoscope, we notice that there are no planets in the Water signs of Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces, except for slow-moving Neptune. This is very appropriate for a land-locked state! Also, the Water signs are about sensitivity, and with its lack of Water Arizona may not fully understand the subtle nuances of lawmaking.
Aside from having the Sun in Aquarius, Arizona also has Mercury and Uranus in this signs. Uranus is a rebellious influence, and in Aquarius it enjoys upsetting the apple-cart.
Yet we mustn’t forget that Aquarius is a sign that’s ruled by Saturn, and many Aquarians are deeply conservative, and they’re very aware of their boundaries. This situation is further emphasised by the fact that Arizona has the Moon and Venus in Capricorn, which is another sign ruled by boundary-conscious Saturn. The big boundary, or border, is of course the one with Mexico!
