Astrology and Gun Control

by Archie Dunlop on June 28, 2010

The US Supreme Court has just voted by a margin of 5-4 that the right to bear arms  should be universal, across the fifty states of  the Union.  So it’s now unconstitutional for individual states and cities to legislate again gun ownership.  This ruling will have an immediate impact on the city of Chicago, which had a ban on handguns, and it’s likely to affect other cities, such as New York, though there is some argument about how significant the ruling is.

From an astrological point of view, it probably is significant.  In astrology the planet ruling firearms is Uranus, and at the end of May Uranus moved into Aries.  The Aries point is about the world at large, so Uranus moving into Aries is about firearms manifesting in the real world.  Furthermore, at the beginning of June Jupiter made a conjunction to Uranus.  Jupiter is the planet of freedom, so when it conjuncts Uranus we see gun control laws being rolled back, or in this case, declared unconstitutional.

Jupiter is also the planet of judges and lawyers, so when Jupiter conjuncts Uranus the highest court in the land regards gun ownership as being a fundamental right.

From an outsider’s perspective, America’s love affair with gun seems strange.  Although there may be individual cases where having a gun has saved someone’s life, the overall impact on society is almost certainly negative – every year thousands of Americans are killed  by guns, many of them by accident.

Yet when one looks at America’s horoscope, for the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4 1776, at 5.10 pm, it all makes sense.

At the time of the signing there was a wide Mars-Uranus conjunction, close to the Descendant.  The Descendant is the point in the horoscope which is least conscious, and it shows America’s paranoia about external enemies.  You have to arm yourself, in case the British, or the Canadians or the Russians or the Arabs invade.  Even if they don’t invade, you have to protect your home and family from an unseen enemy.

Unfortunately, in the act of protecting yourself, you often create the very thing you try to avoid.  You protect a home that’s already reasonably safe by buying guns.  And it is the gun one buys to protect oneself that goes off by accident, or gets discharged in a fleeting moment of domestic anger.

Talking about domestic matters, Uranus is currently hitting the cusp of America’s Fourth House, and in astrology the Fourth House is connected with the home and family.  We already know that one manifestation of this transit is the BP oil spill, but another manifestation could be the Supreme Court decision.  In places like Chicago and New York, guns (Uranus) are about to be brought into the home, as a constitutional right.  Is this really something to be welcomed?

The right to bear arms is in our Bill of Rights; personally I was glad to see it upheld. I have never owned a gun, or seen a neighbor with one, but we are fond of the freedom to do so. I know bad things can happen, but its the freedom of choice that interests me. Must be in our national chart!

There was an interesting thread on reddit this week, commenting on the nature of the US. Its fascinating to read how others view you!

Jean,

But isn’t this more to do with the USA’s Protestant roots? As protestants regard the Bible as being the final word, in America the Constitution has an almost religious status.

The Protestant – even Calvinist roots – are further shown by the fact that freedom is selective. You’re not free to visit any online gambling site you care to choose, at least if it’s abroad. Also, you’re not free to grow and use cannabis, and other drugs.

You’ve also got the alchohol issue – the US did at one stage try to prohibit it!
