What’s the best star sign for a general? You would have thought that Leo was pretty good, especially as Napoleon had this star sign. Yet a Leo general, namely Stanley McChrystal, has just got himself into hot water, as a result of his ill-considered remarks.
Until very recently, Stanley McChrystal was the Commander of US forces in Afghanistan. He allowed the Rolling Stone magazine to observe the verbal interaction between himself and his aides, and there was strong criticism of the Obama administration, and in particular of the Vice President, Joe Biden.
Stanley McChrystal’s behaviour was widely seen as extraordinary, because serving general aren’t supposed to criticise their political masters, at least in front of journalists.
To understand what’s going on, it might be a good idea to look at the general’s horoscope.
Stanley McChrystal was born on August 14 1954, which makes him a Leo. If he’s typical of his star sign, then he probably has a high opinion of himself, and might think that in some respects he can do a better job than the politicians he has to answer to.
However we shouldn’t push the Leo stereotype too far. The Rolling Stone article makes it clear that Stanley McChrystal dislikes the publicity associated with his job, and that he is also very down to earth – for example, he doesn’t like fancy restaurants.
This possibly has something to do with the fact that he was born close to a Full Moon – the Moon in Aquarius was making an opposition aspect to the Leo Sun. Leo likes to be in charge, and has pronounced leadership qualities, but the Moon in Aquarius is independent-minded. He wants to lead in his own way, and for an American general, operating in a political as well as military environment, that’s probably not an option.
Stanley McChrystal’s replacement in Afghanistan is David Petraeus, born on November 7 1952. I don’t know if the Afghan War is winnable, but if anyone can win it, then surely it’s a Scorpio.
David Petraeus shares his Scorpio star sign with a number of illustrious commanders, such as George Patton, Irwin Rommel and Bernard Montgomery. And he actually has the same birthday as Leon Trotsky, who was born on November 7 1879. While Leon Trotsky is most famous as a communist ideologue, he was actually a brilliant strategist, whose military skill, in the aftermath of the Russian Revolution, saved the Soviets from a massive attack by their enemies.
The reason Scorpios make good generals is clear. They’re very intuitive, and they understand what’s going through their enemies’ minds. So if David Petraeus is given a free hand in Afghanistan, he could quite conceivably snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.
