Astrological round-up for Friday June 11 – the stock market, BP, the World Cup

by Archie Dunlop on June 10, 2010

At the beginning of the week there was a conjunction between Jupiter and Uranus.  On paper it should have been a liberating experience, where we were able to confront some of the things holding us back.  In practice the global stock markets certainly showed signs of resilience, though it’s too early to say whether this conjunction is able to stop the rot.

One company that has been showing no signs of recovery is BP.  It’s share price has fallen off a cliff, and it might then be a good idea to have a quick look at its horoscope.  Over the years BP has undergone a number of changes, but the original company, the Anglo-Persian Oil Company, was incorporated on April 14 1909.  Being an Aries organisation it wants action, and perhaps its hastiness to get results contributed to the disaster.

In this April 14 chart Mercury, the communication planet, is conjunct Saturn, and this conjunction is making a square aspect to Neptune.  This configuration has the potential to cause major communication problems, and since the spill, BP have clearly been finding it very difficult to say the right things.

We also have to remember that Saturn is the planet of control, and its aspect with Neptune is all about the desire to control and exploit oil reserves.  Yet Neptune represents an energy that can be very difficult to control.

As to why the disaster happened when it did, there was a New Moon on April 14, just six days before the initial explosion.  In other words BP had a New Moon on its birthday.  New Moons are about new beginnings, but obviously it wasn’t the kind of new beginning that BP had in mind.

Finally there’s the World Cup in South Africa.  In astrology most things have a horoscope, and that includes football competitions.  Although the World Cup has an opening ceremony, most astrologers regard the beginning of the competition as being when the first game kicks off.  Which means 4 pm on Friday June 11, in Johannesburg.

I doubt that it’s going to be one of the better World Cups.  It begins just before a New Moon, so it’s starting during the last embers of a dying lunar cycle, when the emphasis is on endings rather than beginnings. So whatever the expectations, they’re unlikely to be fulfilled.

Nonetheless there could be a lot of talking.  Or should I say complaining?  Mercury is making an exact, 90-degree contact to Mars in Virgo, so just about every aspect of the World Cup will be vociferously analysed.  For example the infrastructure, the stadiums, the security and of course the refereeing decisions.

We then have the question of who is going to win the World Cup.  I haven’t given the matter much thought, but the one thing I do know is, that it’s not going to be England.  So if you’re an England fan, put away your flag and your beer and go back to work.
