I’m not going to get involved in the debate about whether or not cannabis should be legalised. It’s true that for a minority of users cannabis can have psychiatric side-effects, including schizophrenia. It’s also true that vacuums will always be filled. If you manage to stop people taking cannabis, they’ll find something else to take, which will almost certainly have far worse side-effects. There’s also the obvious point that by keeping cannabis illegal you’re encouraging criminal gangs and you’re also denying tax revenue to the government.
Yet there are some people who don’t share my indifference. Like the Canadian cannabis campaigner Marc Emery. He believes that cannabis should be freely available and he has become a crusader and martyr (to some) for the cause. Not only did he campaign in favour of legalisation, but he also had a business, selling pipes, bongs and most importantly, seeds. Through his base in Canada, his seeds were exported to the United States, and as a result he has just been extradited to the US, where he faces a five year prison sentence for distribution.
Marc Emery was born on February 13 1958, which makes him an Aquarian. And I think a very typical one. Aquarians are famous for being individualists, and Marc Emery clearly puts a high premium on personal freedom. Sometimes this star sign goes a step further, and sets itself apart from society and its laws. Not only does Aquarius do what it wants, but it’s also quite prepared to break laws that it doesn’t agree with.
However it mightn’t just be an Aquarian thing. When I was reading Marc Emery’s biography, I was struck by some of the similarities between him and Howard Marks, the Oxford-educated cannabis dealer, who like Emery once stood for parliament to help publicise his cause. In addition, Howard Marks spent seven years in a Federal prison.
Marks was born on August 13 1945 – in other words he’s a Leo, with his birthday is exactly six months from that of Mark Emery. In the jargon Leo and Aquarius are both ‘fixed’ signs. They have incredible self-belief, that at times has transcended legal considerations.
Going back to Marc Emery’s horoscope, and he has a conjunction between Jupiter and Neptune, in Scorpio. Jupiter is the planet of expansion, while Neptune is the planet of drugs, so one manifestation of this conjunction is the distribution of cannabis seeds all over North America.
Furthermore, Marc Emery has the North Node of the Moon conjunct his Jupiter and Neptune. The North Node represents the way forward, and one might then say that it really was his destiny to be an active campaigner for the legalisation of cannabis.
This raises important questions about the difference between good and bad Karma, but I’ll leave that for another article.
