I believe that reasonably soon Scotland will be an independent country and the catalyst for change will be the Jupiter-Saturn opposition, which dominates the astrological landscape over the next year or more.
As I’ve discussed in numerous articles, the Jupiter-Saturn opposition is about splitting apart. If a union has become untenable, then Jupiter and Saturn will tear it apart.
At the time of the last Jupiter-Saturn opposition, in 1989 and 1990, Communism in Europe fell, which meant that the Warsaw Pact and the Soviet Union broke up. Additionally, this opposition began the process which led to the peaceful splitting of Czechoslovakia, and the very violent splitting of Yugoslavia.
When we look at the astrology of Scotland, we have to also take into consideration the political environment. Since the last Jupiter-Saturn opposition, Scotland has been given its own assembly. Also, there has been a political polarisation between England and Scotland. It’s been happening since the 1970s, but in the last two general elections the Conservative Party only won a single parliamentary seat in Scotland. This contrasts with the situation in England, where in the recent election the majority of seats were won by the Conservatives.
So far, the demands for Scottish independence have largely come from the Scots. However as the Jupiter-Saturn opposition hits home, there’ll be demands in England for a splitting from Scotland. I would guess that they’ll be fuelled by the Conservative Party, who’ll realise that it’s in their political best interests for England to get shot of its northern neighbour.
As far as horoscopes are concerned, the union between Scotland and England happened on May 1 1707, when the Sun was in Taurus. Taurus is a sign which is both tough and resilient, so it’s not surprising that this union has lasted for so long. However one should remember that when Taureans are under pressure, they tend to snap rather rather than bend.
Using this horoscope, there is a suggestion that Scotland’s independence might be a done deal by 2013 or 2014, when Saturn makes an opposition aspect to this Taurus Sun.
If we look at the horoscope for the United Kingdom, set for January 1 1801, we notice that over the next year Jupiter is crossing its Descendant, and Saturn its Ascendant. This is serious, and will threaten the United Kingdom’s integrity. So by 2011 we could see a split between England and Scotland being seriously talked about.
This split is probably a good thing. In many respects England is a Capricorn country, because William the Conqueror was crowned King of England on December 25 1066. Scotland, by contrast, is traditionally seen as a Cancerian country. I’m not quite sure why, but if you’ll forgive the stereotype, Cancerians can be not just family-orientated, but also clannish. And it’s worth noting that Robert the Bruce, Scotland’s greatest hero, was a Cancerian, and when the Sun was in Cancer, on June 24 1314, he won a famous victory against the English, at the Battle of Bannockburn.
In astrology Capricorn and Cancer are opposite each other. The grudging chemistry between these two signs might be strong, but after over three hundred years of marriage their incompatibilities are becoming clear.
By the way, from June 2013 through to July 2014 Jupiter, the planet of expansion and good fortune, is moving through Cancer. I think that this is the time for Scotland to go it alone.

Hi Archie, In the light of recent developments – interesting that you pinpoint 2014 – which is Alex Salmond’s choice for a referendum. Here is a link to a recent post of mine on the subject.
