In theory astrology should be a brilliant method of personnel selection, especially if you’re selecting candidates for an important job. You go through their horoscopes, and you find someone with a brilliant chart, who is also going through a fortunate phase of life.
In practice there are problems. For one thing it might be against employment law, at least in certain countries. Ideally you also need a birth time, and I can’t imagine a job application form asking for such a detail.
Then there is the question of truthfulness. Once it got out that a company was using astrology to make hiring decisions, people would lie about their birth time, so as to give themselves the best possible horoscope. This would be especially common in England, where the time of birth isn’t usually on the birth certificate.
In terms of British politics, the Labour Party will soon have to elect a new leader, now that Gordon Brown’s political career is drawing to a close.
The front runner is Cancerian David Miliband, who at the moment is Foreign Secretary. He is apparently super-intelligent, and because of his star sign, he’s not someone to underestimate. Cancerians can indeed be people who are difficult to get the better of, and during a leadership contest they come into their own.
However in his horoscope Mars, the planet of aggression, is in Libra, which is one of the worst signs for it to be in. In spite of his Cancerian star sign, he lacks the killer instincts that a good politician needs to have. We’ve already seen this – when Gordon Brown’s back was against the wall, David Miliband could have give him the final push, and in all probability become British Prime Minister. But he didn’t take his chance. Or, to use an English phrase, ‘he bottled it’.
Overall, David Miliband’s chart isn’t particularly exceptional and I can’t see him being a great leader. Yet that doesn’t mean that he isn’t the right person to take over from Gordon Brown.
In his Hindu horoscope David Miliband has a reasonably strong Saturn, and right now he is probably in a period of life that is ruled by this planet. If he’s not, he’ll be entering it over the next few years.
All things being equal, it’s a time when David Miliband will be successful, and his verbal and oratorical skills will be well above average. This contrasts with the Conservative leader, David Cameron, who for the next few years is going through a bad patch, regardless of whether or not he becomes Prime Minister.
Furthermore, David Miliband’s Mars in Libra might be weak, but it’s a perfect foil for attacking David Cameron, whose Sun is in Libra. So if David Cameron was Prime Minister and David Miliband was Leader of the Opposition, I feel that David Miliband would increasingly get the better of him.
I haven’t looked at other candidates for the job, but having analysed David Miliband’s horoscope I believe that he can do reasonably well, and compared with David Cameron he can really shine.
