I’m one of those sad people who are obsessed about the Second World War. I just can’t get enough of it, and as you might expect, I’m fascinated by the horoscopes of the Nazi leaders. Adolf Hitler was a Taurus, Hermann Goering was a Capricorn, Heinrich Himmler was a Libra… and Josef Goebbels was a Scorpio.
Josef Goebbels was also a journalist, who become Hitler’s propaganda minister. He married another Scorpio, Magda, and they had a large family – five girls and one boy. A book has recently been written about the oldest child, Helga, titled Chocolate Cake with Hitler.
In 1945, as the Soviets surrounded Berlin, Josef and Magda Goebbels refused to leave the city. They had the opportunity, but they instead decided that they and their family were all going to die.
On May 1 1945 Magda Goebbels got her children ready for bed, and had a doctor inject each of them with morphine. And then, as they slept, cyanide capsules were crushed in their mouths. With all the children dead, Magda and her husband committed suicide.
Emma Craigie, the author of Chocolate Cake with Hitler, suggests that Helga Goebbels had an awareness of what was going on around her, as the war drew to a close.
Helga was indeed forced to visit badly wounded troops, for the filming of one of her father’s propaganda films. There is also evidence that she tried to resist, as the cyanide was forced into her mouth – an autopsy found bruising on her cheeks.
Helga Goebbels was born on September 1 1932, the day after a total eclipse of the Sun – she therefore had both the Sun and the Moon in Virgo, close to Neptune. I don’t regard this eclipse as being fortunate. The Moon, that’s so important in a female chart, was too close to the Sun. Symbolically we can see the Sun as being powerful men, in particular her father Josef and his boss, Adolf Hitler.
Neptune is a planet that’s often connected with drugs and poisoning, and its proximity to her Sun and Moon was a bad omen, given the fact that she ended up being drugged with morphine and poisoned with cyanide.
When we take a closer look at her horoscope, the signature of death by drugs and poison becomes clearer.
Her Uranus and Neptune were almost exactly 135-degrees apart. This is an important angle, because it’s three-eighths of a circle. And according to Reinhold Ebertin, the Uranus-Neptune combination is about ‘The elimination of the waking consciousness’.
Furthermore, Helga had both Uranus and Neptune aspecting her Mars-Saturn midpoint. Planets on the Mars-Saturn midpoint can sometimes describe the nature of someone’s death, and in this case, we have the idea of a sudden death, through poisoning.
Both Helga’s parents were Scorpios, and their behaviour shows the worst side of the sign. There can be something very destructive about the sign Scorpio, and one thinks of a Scorpio surrounded by a ring of burning petrol, stinging itself to death.
Indeed Scorpios, when they are under extreme pressure, can regard death and destruction as being the only solution. Matters are made worse by their possessiveness – in the case of Josef and Magda, they stopped seeing their children as unique individuals, with unique destinies. They instead became part and parcel of a wider, emotional and military drama.
So to Josef and Magda the fall of the Third Reich was such a catastrophy that it was best that the whole family die.
At this stage it should be made clear that this really was why the children died. Some people have suggested that it was because the parents were afraid that the children might get into the hands of the Soviet soldiers, who at the time were raping and killing their way across Germany. However as I’ve already said, the family had plenty of time to escape, and in fact Josef and Magda had decided months in advance that they were all going to die.
That’s another feature of Scorpio. Having a plan and sticking to it, and refusing to see alternative courses of action.

Obsession with certain periods of history is an interesting phenomenon! My husband and I were devoted to the Transcendentalists of the late 1800s, so much so that we visited many of the homes of leading figures. Visiting Emerson’s home was very emotional for me.
You make everything sound so absolute, Archie. What about God and divine intervention? Would love to hear your thoughts…
Vidya,
Thanks very much for commenting – it’s nice to know that someone reads what I write!
I am of course looking at the whole thing from the perspective of astrology, and down-playing other possibilities. In the case of Helga Goebbels, I was not suggesting that she was fated to die in the way she did. I was simply pointing out, that amongst other things, she had both Uranus and Neptune aspecting her Mars-Saturn midpoint – and the Uranus and Neptune were themselves making an 135-degree aspect. While this configuration fits her death, it could be interpreted in other ways. She was clearly someone who should have stayed away from alcohol and drugs, because she was vulnerable to their effects. Interestingly, there was another famous person born on her birthday, September 1 1932, namely the socialite Sunny von Bülow. She went into a coma in 1980, which she remained in until her death in 2008. No-one knows for sure why she went into a coma – one theory is that it was a drug overdose, another that it was hypoglycemia. Nonetheless, she had the astrological signatures that I have just referred to, and we still have the idea of ‘elimination of the waking consciousness’.
