Can we have seven years of bad luck every thirty years?

by Archie Dunlop on April 1, 2010

Sounds crazy, doesn’t it?  Being miserable for quarter of our lives.    However if one takes Hindu astrology literally, then it really is possible.

Let me explain.  The planet Saturn takes twenty-nine and a half years to go round the Sun.  During part of its orbit, Saturn will be relatively close to the position of our Moon – in other words, the Moon’s position at the time of our birth.

This closeness can be understood in terms of signs.  Let us say that I have got the Moon in Aries.  Saturn will be close to my Moon when it is in the sign before Aries, which is Pisces, the sign after Aries, which is Taurus, and of course when it’s in Aries itself.  And it take Saturn about seven years to travel through three signs.

Saturn is the planet of limitation and restriction, that’s often connected with Karma.

The Moon, according to Hindu astrology, is the most important planet in our chart.  It represents our fundamental security, and it has both material and emotional connotations.  When Saturn gets close to our Moon, there’s a possibility that our luck starts to nosedive.

This seven years of bad luck is an important thing to consider in Hindu astrology, and it actually has a name, ‘Sadhesati’ – a name that can evoke fear and foreboding.

At this stage, you might accuse me of being a scaremonger.  Isn’t scaremongering how astrologers  make their money?

In my defence, I would argue that we all need to understand the nature of bad luck.  Indeed I would say that a large part of my role as an astrologer is to help people manage and conceptualise their bad luck, and in particular, to give it a time frame.

In astrology there are many reasons why things can go wrong, but if we know that a bad patch that we’re going through won’t last forever, then we’ll feel a greater sense of control; and most importantly, we can start looking beyond our immediate situation, to a brighter future.

I have just come through Sturn in Virgo & I was born w/ Saturn conjunct the Sun in August 1949…so I can relate to the idea & facts of ‘Bad’ luck. What an experience. I lost my wife (she left) & business (restaurant) is struggling…so it goes. I like your site & feel there are some brights spots in all this Saturn return.
