Madonna and J.K. Rowling: what it takes to be a Leo superstar

by Archie Dunlop on February 24, 2010

I recently wrote an article about J.K. Rowling, and a friend of mine pointed out some similarities between her horoscope and that of Madonna.

It’s certainly true that both women are Leos, who have become fantastically successful.  And their success hasn’t been a temporary blip.  It’s persisted for years and years, and in the process they’ve made a lot of money and they’ve helped define our culture.

At the most basic level, Madonna and J.K. Rowling remind us that Leo is the best star sign to have, all things being equal.

That might sound like a big generalisation, but the Sun is the ruler of Leo, and Leo is therefore the sign that it works best in.

Leo is also a sign that’s connected with creativity – the kind of creativity that focuses on the self rather than on teamwork.  So not surprisingly, Madonna and J.K. Rowling have been successful as individuals, doing something very particular.

Of course there’s a big difference between the two women’s approach.  Madonna is a larger than life singer, who has courted controversy throughout her career, while J.K. Rowling gives the impression of being more reserved, as one would probably expect of a writer.

Yet there is another astrological similarity.  They both have the Moon in Virgo.  I think this is very important, because it tells us what superstardom is all about.

In a female horoscope the Moon sign is often more descriptive than the Sun sign.  This makes sense, because the Moon is a female energy, while the Sun is male.

The sign Virgo, when it’s on best form, is hard-working, and is also a perfectionist.  It wants to get things right, and it’s not happy with second best.  Also, the ruler of Virgo is Mercury, the planet of communication.  So the Moon in Virgo will put a lot of effort into communicating its message.

However Virgo on its own is a sign that’s not connected with stardom.  It’s often modest and self-deprecating, and it tends to keeps its ambitions in check.

We therefore have to see the Sun in Leo and the Moon in Virgo as two, complementary energies.  Leo on its own has got a high opinion of itself, and might believe that it deserves stardom, without being prepared to put in the work.

The Moon in Virgo provides the crucial balance.  It appreciates that without effort nothing much is likely to happen, and it instinctively understands what needs to be done to be successful.

Madonna had to keep pushing, to make sure that she got noticed.  J.K. Rowling had to keep writing, regardless of the outside distractions.

I should also say that both Madonna and J.K. Rowling were born a couple of days after a New Moon.  There was a New Moon in Leo just before their respective births, and they weren’t born until the Moon had changed signs, from Leo to Virgo.

In astrology the Moon is weakened by being in the same sign as the Sun, so it was crucial that this sign-change had happened.  And because both Madonna and J.K. Rowling were born at the beginning of a lunar cycle, they were able to bring something new into the world, which found massive favour with popular culture.
