The February 14 2010 New Moon: an Ox becomes a Tiger

by Archie Dunlop on February 9, 2010

In astrology the lunar cycle is of crucial importance.  It’s the monthly cycle that starts at the New Moon, when from the Earth’s point of view the Sun and the Moon are in the same place.  This cycle peaks at the Full Moon, when the Sun and the Moon are 180 degrees from each other.

On Sunday February 14 there’s a New Moon.  It happens at 2.51 am Greenwich Mean Time.  Which means that if you’re in America, the New Moon takes place the evening before, on Saturday February 13.

All things being equal, New Moons are a fortunate influence.  They represent a new beginning, and the opportunity to distance ourselves from the problems of the past.

Yet every New Moon has its own character, depending on the positions of the other planets.

This New Moon is less than a degree away from Neptune, the planet of confusion.  As a result there could be an air of fantasy.  Not just on the day of the New Moon, but until the following New Moon, on March 15.

As a result of the Neptune influence, we have to be very careful about the nature of any new projects we commit ourselves to.  They might sound good on paper, but the reality could be very different – confusion, disappointment and waste.

Under these circumstances, we should avoid signing up to get-rich-quick schemes.  Smooth salespeople promise much and deliver little!

In terms of the news, I think a couple of major frauds may be uncovered.

On a different note, astrologers often connect the planet Neptune with oil and gas.  There may be important global developments, relating to the supply and demand of energy.  Things connected with pipelines and oil transport might be in focus.

And of course Neptune is the god of the sea.  There could be news stories about the sea, that grab everyone’s attention.

The New Moon is in Aquarius, so it’s possible that Russia and the Ukraine are strongly affected by it.  This is because according to classical astrology, Aquarius covers this part of the world.

We should also keep an eye  on what’s going on in Japan, because when the New Moon is exact, it’s close to Japan’s southern meridian.

From the point of view of Chinese astrology, the New Moon marks the beginning of the Year of the Tiger.

The Year of the Ox, that started in January 2009, was about containment.  The world dealt with the consequences of the credit crunch, and did its best to stave off economic collapse.  The Year of the Tiger will be about the consequences of these actions.

However I believe that in the first instance the Year of the Tiger will be a positive influence.  There’ll be less fear, and for many of us the future will seem very promising.
