A train ride with Brangelina: Gemini meets Sagittarius

by Archie Dunlop on January 26, 2010

Celebrities don’t really interest me, but it’s difficult to shut them out.  Other people seem to find them fascinating and the moment you’re on the internet you’re blasted with all the latest celebrity gossip.

Even if you’re not on the internet.  Right now I’m sitting in a train, that’s just pulled out of Bratislava’s main station, on its way to Vienna.  On the seat in front of me is a free Austrian newspaper, with a nice picture of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie on the front cover.  The caption reads:

Angelina & Brad: Trennung ist fix – Red Carpet Spezial S.17

Turning to page 17, next to the horoscopes, the newspaper speculates ‘Das Ende?’  My German is non-existent, but even I know what that means.

Actually, I didn’t really need to be reminded that there were rumours that Brad and Angelina’s relationship was coming to an end.  I even know what their respective star signs are, without having to look them up – Angelina’s a Gemini, Brad’s a Sagittarius.

I’m not going to dissect their personalities and demonstrate why each of them are typical of their star signs.  Rather I am going to focus on the dichotomy that opposite signs represent.

In astrology there are six pairs of opposites:

Aries-Libra
Taurus-Scorpio
Gemini-Sagittarius
Cancer-Capricorn
Leo-Aquarius
Virgo-Pisces

When two people meet, whose star signs are opposite each other, there’s often an immediate attraction.  It can, quite literally, be an attraction of opposites, like the opposite poles of two magnets flying together.

Yet when the chemical reaction is happening the two parties might lose their objectivity.  They might genuinely believe that they have lots in common, when in actual fact the opposite is true.

Take Gemini and Sagittarius, in abstract, without reference to Angelina and Brad.

Both of these signs put a high premium on variety, and it’s a combination that can be very exciting.

But Gemini is an Air sign, while Sagittarius is a Fire sign.  Air is about thoughts and concepts, Fire is about inspiration and action.

Gemini and Sagittarius can be mutually supportive, making up for each other’s deficits.  Geminis tends to live in their heads, and Sagittarians can help them to put theory into practice.  Sagittarians, by contrast, can be too eager, and Geminis can encourage them to do a bit more thinking.

However the longer a relationship continues between too people of opposite signs, the greater the possibilities for tension.  The initial excitement and novelty will start wearing off and the fundamental differences might become obvious.

Of course I’m not saying that two people with opposite star signs can’t have a happy and successful relationship.  In fact Brad and Angelina have probably benefited enormously from each other, even if it’s really the case that ‘Das Ende’ is looming.

Which brings me back to my own train ride.  I’m already in Vienna, and there is only one station left before I get to the Südbahnhof terminus.  My wife’s given me a shopping list.  Poppy seeds, fresh mint and rosehip jam.  Farewell Brangelina, it’s back to reality!

I found your thoughts in all the articles very wise and truthful. My only commence is that I believe in honesty and humanity, which our society lacks of. Therefore I believe in Obama’s victory. There will not be other president like him. Hope the planets realize it. Say hello to Prague for me if you ever go there.
