Haiti and personal destiny

by Archie Dunlop on January 19, 2010

As we contemplate the Haiti earthquake, it’s worth considering the limits of personal destiny.

In the case of the earthquake victims, it’s probably not very useful to think in terms of individual destinies.  If each of those victims had consulted an astrologer prior to the disaster, very few would have discovered the truth.  Some would have been told that 2010 was going to be a happy and successful year, others would have been warned about future challenges.  It’s unlikely that death and misery would have been part of the equation.

We must then realise that part of our fate is belonging to a particular group.  We could be born to this group, or we could become temporarily attached to it.  The destiny of the group will, in most cases, over-ride our individuality.

The passengers on board the Titanic had attached themselves to something much bigger than their personal horoscopes.  They were instead small parts of a wider tragedy.

As far as Haiti is concerned, we’re dealing with the destiny of a nation.  A nation that declared its independence on January 1 1804.

This means that Haiti is a Capricorn country.  I’m not sure if that makes much sense, though it is said that Capricorns are very attached to the past.  There would appear to be powerful traditions in Haiti, that might have a negative influence on the country’s development.

More to the point, on January 1 1804 there was a 90-degree aspect between Mars in Capricorn and Saturn in Libra – Mars was in the fourth degree of Capricorn, Saturn was in the fourth degree of Libra.

Traditionally Mars-Saturn aspects are considered very unfortunate, and are often connected with frustration, anger and even death.

The negativity of the Mars-Saturn aspect seems to be born out by Haiti’s experience as a country.  Despite being one of the first countries in the world to throw off the yoke of colonisation, its history has been blighted by corrupt and tyrannical rulers, who rarely gave their country a chance. Indeed Haiti remains the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere.

Unfortunately, this means that when you’re a citizen of Haiti, you partake of the nature of the Mars-Saturn aspect.

At the time of the earthquake there was a 90-degree contact between Saturn and Pluto – Saturn was in the fifth degree of Libra, Pluto in the fourth degree of Capricorn.  So this Saturn-Pluto aspect, that was operational in January 2010, was triggering the Mars-Saturn aspect in the independence horoscope, set for January 1 1804.

The nation is affected, and by definition, the population are as well.  A clear example of the destiny of the collective swamping the destiny of the individual.

To be more specific, and I hope this doesn’t sound too callous, I’m not convinced that the earthquake is the big issue, at least as far as Haiti the nation is concerned.  Change had to happen, and the earthquake is only the catalyst.  There will be a transformation of the country, which will go way beyond the immediate reconstruction of the physical and emotional earthquake damage.  The sickness that was highlighted in the 1804 independence chart will have to be confronted, and hopefully cured.
