The man in the news is Bernard Madoff, the Wall Street guru, who numbered amongst his clients the great and the famous. Not to mention a long list of banks and institutions. He was given large sums of money to invest, and he had a reputation for notching up solid, market-beating returns. But there are now suggestions that it was all a Ponzi-like scam, with money from new clients being used to pay off the older ones. The sums of money that Madoff lost are mind-boggling – they could be in the region of fifty billion dollars.
When you’ve got a credit crunch, and the banking system is in crisis, it’s likely that people like Bernard Madoff will be revealed. The tide goes out, the boats gets beached, and we see their hulls, filthy and pock-marked with barnacles. Those investing in Madoff’s fund were concerned about global financial conditions, and perhaps discovered that they needed to take back the money they had invested. But unfortunately it had all evaporated, in what was perhaps the biggest con ever perpetrated.
Bernard Madoff was apparently born on April 29 1938. Being a Taurus one would have expected him to have good financial skills – after all, Taurus is an Earth sign. And another Taurean who has recently been in the news is Richard Fuld, born on April 26 1946, the CEO of Lehman Brothers.
Taureans can be very stubborn. They have a plan and they stick with it. And sometimes they can turn into juggernauts – they keep going in one direction, and the faster they go, the greater the momentum, the more difficult it is to stop.
Once you start a Ponzi scheme, transferring money from new investors to old, you can’t stop. You have to keep on looking for new customers. And you can’t suddenly become legitimate, investing the money in real securities, because you have to keep the payouts going. Besides, if you become legitimate your rates of returns to existing investors would almost certainly fall, and they might want to put their money elsewhere.
Madoff has the planet Mercury in Aries. Mercury is the planet of communications, Aries is bold and extroverted, so he was able to make big claims, without batting an eyelid. Mercury makes a sixty-degree aspect to Jupiter, so he can make people feel optimistic about his investment skills; yet Mercury also makes a stressful, ninety-degree aspect to Pluto. In astrology the planet Pluto is associated with things that are hidden. Information gets carefully managed, and people are intrigued by the propaganda.
At the time of Madoff’s last birthday, on April 29 2008, there was a close, 90-degree aspect between Mercury and Neptune. It’s a deceptive influence, and we see the possibility of confused minds. Or clever plans unravelling, in the tides of global economic chaos.
But I suspect that the seeds of Madoff’s down fall were sown in the summer of 2007. Using the Hindu Zodiac, Saturn moved from Cancer to Leo – where it made an opposition to Madoff’s Jupiter. Madoff is currently in a planetary period ruled by Jupiter, so his luck, which had continued for so long, came under direct attack from Saturn, which stays in Leo until next year.
Then there’s the question of Karma. It’s clear that Madoff is a man with strong desires. And while there’s nothing wrong with having desires, they can sometimes get out of hand – wanting something for the sake of it, and not thinking of the consequences. However what about the collective Karma? People trusting their money to another person, without doing proper checks. Believing that one man can not only preserve their wealth, but also make it grow, at a mouthwatering 12% a year. Perhaps Bernard Madoff was an instrument of their Karma, and we shouldn’t be too critical of him?

Hi Archie
I have continued to browse your web site ever since you gave a most inciteful reading of my question back in October. I always look forward to your interpretations of the people in the news.
RE: Bernard Madoff–I always feel that whenever a person of his character meets up with the investors he was swindling, there is a karmic lesson for ALL people involved. Sort of like the planets aligning at just the right time to bring all the players together at the perfect moment.
Thanks again
Susan
Dear Archie
Well done for being the first to tell me Bernard Madoff is a Taurus – the money sign par excellence. As Taurus is practical it would be virtually impossible for anyone to resist his financial offerings. He would be able to make them sound like good common sense.
I await the next new set of current comments with interest.

I’m a client of Standard Chartered and they invested my money in Fairfield Greenwich – which in turn invested in Bernard Madoff’s company. I now want to take out a class action suit against Standard Chartered. Is anyone in a similar position? If you are, please visit my website.
