Would Obama choosing Hillary wreck everything?

by Archie Dunlop on June 4, 2008

I’ve said on several occasions that I don’t think Obama will win in November. But what if he chose Hillary as his running mate?

Astrology aside, and just using common sense, Obama will not win if he doesn’t have Hillary on board – too many of Hillary’s dejected supporters will either abstain or vote for McCain. And Hillary, short of the unthinkable, has very little chance of ever being president if she become’s Obama’s running mate.

If the Obama-Hillary team lose in November both of their political careers will be in trouble.

If Obama wins, it’ll be a one-term presidency, and the Republicans will be back in the White House in 2013. At this stage of the Jupiter-Saturn cycle Obama would not, I believe, be able to deliver on his promises, and his administration would be (unfairly) crushed by the legacy of George Bush Junior.

So, in some ways Hillary should be glad that Obama has scotched her 2008 bid for the White House. If Obama hadn’t existed, I doubt she would have won in November, and I think her campaigning this year, spurred on by Obama, has been the making of her as a politician. And now comes the tricky bit. She has to avoid being Obama’s running mate, without appearing graceless. Hopefully for her, Obama and his advisors will choose someone else, and seal their defeat in November. Then she’s got an excellent chance of winning in 2012, though at this stage I’m not predicting anything.

As for my prediction if Obama runs with Hillary… I don’t know. Common sense tells me that they’d win. But astrology and common sense sometimes make a bad mix. For the moment I’ll withhold my judgement.
